An Intro to the Basics of Motion

What is Classical Mechanics?

  • Put simply, Classical Mechanics is the study of the motion of objects. Sir Isaac Newton's discovery of forces sheds light on the importance that Mechanics plays in each of our lives. From Translational motion to Rotational motion, it is our understanding of Mechanics that allows us to expand on the application of Physics in our everyday life.

Newton's Laws

  • To begin learning about the various units in AP Physics, we must begin with Newton's 3 Laws of Motion. Below are the 3 Laws that you should be familiar with:

1st Law: An object in motion stays in motion and an object at rest stays in rest unless acted upon by an external force.

2nd Law: For a constant mass, Force is equal to mass times acceleration. (ΣF=ma)

3rd Law: For every action (force) in nature there is an equal and opposite reaction force (Forces come in equal and opposite magnitude pairs).
